Once in Oaxaca City, the mix of indigenous and colonial cultures that make the state unique is evident in every aspect of the city. The majority of the state's inhabitants are mestizo (a mix of Spanish and Indian). Even the name "Oaxaca" was transformed by the Spanish from the Náhuatl word Huaxyacac meaning at the center of the huajes.
